Barcelona secured a 2-0 victory over Espanyol on Thursday to win another Catalan derby, and with that, they are La Liga champions. With two matches to go, they cannot be caught by Real Madrid, who are seven points adrift.

Barcelona knew going into proceedings at the RCDE stadium that they needed to win to secure themselves as champions. But it was far from straightforward, as Hansi Flick eluded to during his post-match press conference, as per Diario AS.

“Espanyol defended very well, they were very dangerous. I’m very happy. I think in the warm-up Lamine scored two goals like that, it was perfect.”

Flick reflects on incredible second half of 2024-25 season

The victory over Espanyol continued Barcelona’s unbeaten run in La Liga in 2025. This streak helped them overcome Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in the title race, and Flick expressed his pride at the performance of his players since the start of January.

“I think the second part of the season has been incredible, we haven’t lost any games. I congratulate the team, the club and the fans. It’s been incredible. It’s always important to be mentally strong. What we have trained after the winter break has helped us. Also winning the Super Cup gave us confidence. The players have reached their highest level, like Frenkie and others have improved.”

For the second time in three seasons, Barcelona won the La Liga title at the RCDE Stadium. There were fiery scenes in 2023, and two years on, Flick was keen to ensure that there was no repeat.

“I know what the situation is with respect to what happened two years ago and I wanted to celebrate it inside.”

Barcelona can now approach their final two matches against Villarreal and Athletic Club at ease. It has been a wonderful season for the Catalans, who have now completed a domestic treble of La Liga, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup.
