Former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson has insisted that he has heard too many excuses from Gers boss Philippe Clement and feels he is now under big pressure after his side stumbled to a 1-0 shock defeat to Queen’s Park.
Clement’s team have headed for an early exit from their Scottish Cup campaign after they were defeated at home by the second-tier outfit in the game on Sunday.
With their exit from the competition, the Gers now face the possibility of a trophy-less season unless they somehow lift the Europa League.
Ferguson feels the lack of desire and drive in Rangers’ display in the game may be because they think their job is done as they got to the last 16 of the Europa League and asserted that it is up to Clement to keep his squad motivated.
He admitted his frustration with Clement’s excuses whenever his team do not do well and added that his side should be able to win games against opposition like that, with the standard of the squad that the manager has at his disposal.
“I’ve heard too many excuses”, Ferguson told BBC Sportsound.
“If the manager is angry, you can imagine how the fans will be feeling tonight.
“They’re devastated, but I want to hear players devastated. I didn’t see that
“It’s as if it didn’t mean enough to the players.
“Maybe they think because they got to the last 16 of the Europa League that it’s fine and they’re done. It’s not.
“That’s the job of a manager to keep them motivated.
“This is why Clement comes under serious threat to losing his job.
“He’s got to win games like this with the quality that the manager has got at his disposal”, he added.
Clement’s men will now shift their attention to the league as they travel to face seventh-placed Hearts on Sunday.
