Calmac is going nowhere for now but at 32 he’s approaching the last stretch of his playing career with perhaps another three seasons to go before the Celtic captain contemplates hanging up his boots. And when the time comes O’Donnell reckons that the Motherwell FC teenager who this week broke into the Scotland set-up, could be the man Celtic turn to to replace their talismanic skipper in the centre of the park.

Celtic ‘s knock on the door

Celtic ‘s knock on the door in the closing stages of the January transfer window was resisted by the Fir Park club who have set a record breaking transfer asking price for Lennon Miller.  However with just one more season to go on his current Motherwell deal, the Lanarkshire community owned club is almost certain to cash in on their prize asset this summer.

Celtic face stiff competition in this transfer race

Amid stiff competition from Italy, France and England Celtic will be in the mix for this transfer story and they could possibly be joined by theRangers if their dreams come true and the American consortium come in with an open cheque book this summer.

Speaking on Go Radio’s Football Show, Stephen O’Donnell assessed the reasons why he believes that Lennon Miller moving to Celtic would make perfect sense.  He explained: “Similar to when you see Callum McGregor. I have heard some Celtic fans kind of being critical of Callum McGregor this season. Then, he is missing for the derby. By all accounts, I missed the game, but Celtic were way off it and that’s when everybody says, ‘how good is Callum McGregor’.

‘When he is out of our team, by God, we are a different side’

“Lennon Miller is a wee bit like that, in a way. When he is out of our team, by God, we are a different side and we miss him immensely and, for an 18-year-old, to be that integral to your side, that alone tells you how good of a footballer he is.

“He can mix it with the physical side of it. He has the technical ability I can only dream of. Can he be the best in Scotland? I don’t know. But I do think he has a right good chance if he keeps progressing the way he has.

“Touching on Lennon Miller for the Celtic replacement, it would make sense, in that regard. He can play both positions. He could even adjust game time slowly. He can learn.”

Working with Brendan Rodgers might appeal to Lennon Miller

You would imagine that working under Brendan Rodgers would be an ideal outcome for the talented Motherwell starlet. Rodgers is highly regarded in the game as an excellent development coach and he would certainly improve Miller’s game should the youngster end up at Celtic this summer.

Any Celtic reluctance might be due to David Turnbull coming through at Motherwell in similar circumstances but failing to reach the expected heights in a Celtic jersey before  a move to Cardiff City.  Turnbull is currently sidelined at the Championship side with a long term injury picked up in December after making 12 appearances for Cardiff this season.

Will Celtic – or indeed any club – meet Motherwell’s £8m valuation?

Will Celtic – or indeed any club – meet Motherwell’s £8m valuation? The highest bidder is likely to win but the figure might end up being closer to £6m, which easily beats Motherwell’s record when selling David Turnbull to Celtic for £3m in August 2020.
