Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has returned to group training ahead of the Europa League clash with FCSB on Thursday evening (via the club’s official website).
Shaw has struggled with injuries in the last 12 months. He made 15 appearances across all competitions last season and has only featured in three games this term.
The English defender can play as a left wing-back or a left centre-back, making him suitable to play under manager Ruben Amorim.
Amorim has suggested that Shaw will be managed carefully, stating that he does not ‘know’ when he will play again. He is unlikely to make the trip to Bucharest to face FCSB.
Diogo Dalot, Tyrell Malacia and Noussair Mazraoui are left-wing-back options for the clash.
Malacia is likely to leave before the end of this transfer window. Spanish club Real Betis have made ‘enquiries’ to United about signing him.
His departure would leave United with Shaw, Mazraoui and Dalot as left wing-back options for the rest of the season.
However, Patrick Dorgu’s impending arrival from Lecce would change the dynamic.
Shaw has struggled with his fitness since joining Man United from Southampton in 2014, missing 327 games for club and country.
There is no sign that his persistent injury concerns will stop soon. It is best that United move him on in the summer.
United should be able to get a decent fee for him as he has close to two years left on his contract.
He earns £150,000 weekly, making him the joint-sixth highest earner at the club. His departure will also help reduce the wage bill.
Shaw would not be missed, as United will soon complete a move for Dorgu. The Danish youngster is expected to be the first-choice left wing-back.
Paraguay wonderkid Diego Leon will join in the summer. The 17-year-old can serve as a deputy for Dorgu, having tasted first-team action with Paraguayan club Cerro Porteno.
