No one in their right mind would have ever predicted at the start of the season that this would be a thirteenth vs fourteenth placed fixture in the middle of February, but with both clubs being impacted by the Thursday-Sunday football via their involvements in the UEFA Europa League, they have been made to pay in the Premier League. Manager Ange Postecoglou joked in an interview with Sky Sports this afternoon that he was relieved to have finally had a free Thursday, The 59-year-old Australian said "my boy said to me last night, dad it seems like you haven't had a game for ages" when in reality it was only four days.
Postecoglou has provided some positive team news going into the game vs the Red Devils in a video posted on the club's official X (formerly Twitter) account earlier on today. The likes of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, winger Wilson Odobert and Defender Destiny Udogie are all back in full training and will be available for selection this weekend, with mdfielder James Maddison also back in training, however Postecoglou said that he probably will be back for next weekend rather than this Sunday, and the same for Welsh international Brennan Johnson. Central defenders Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are still looking at a couple to three more weeks on the sidelines, as well as front man Dominic Solanke.
Spurs have got the better of the twenty time champions of England in both games where they have met this season, with the Lilywhites easing their way to a 0-3 victory at Old Trafford at the back end of September, with goals coming from Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski and Solanke. Then Spurs beat Manchester United again in the EFL Carabao Cup quarter-finals, in what was an absolute classic seven goal thriller that Spurs edged 4-3. Tottenham will be looking to do a first ever league double over Ruben Amorim's side in the Premier League era, and this is probably the best time to try and achieve this, with Spurs having the upper hand in the last two competitive fixtures at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Red Devils, just like Spurs are still without their Argentine world cup winning centre back, with Lisandro Martinez picking up an injury in the 0-2 home loss to Crystal Palace, as well as England internationals Luke Shaw and Mason Mount, who have both had their careers majorly stalled at Manchester United through injuries. The reds have only won three times away from Old Trafford this season, however Spurs are on their worst run at home in the Premier League for seventeen years, with their last home victory coming at the beginning of November when they beat Aston Villa 4-1.
Postecoglou will be eager to put things right after exiting both cup competitions recently and start climbing the Premier League table, as he would have been feeling the pressure as now the only chance to bring some Silverware to N17 this season is going to be via the European stage, which is going to be very difficult to achieve if the performances do not improve from now on.
The match will be kicking off on Sunday 16th February at half past four UK time and will be shown on Sky Sports Main Event and Premier League. Let's hope for a great game between two teams who will be feeling the pressure and will be absolutely desperate for a win.
