Manchester United have sent scouts to watch Sean Longstaff this season and are considering an approach for the Newcastle midfielder.

Longstaff was a transfer target for Manchester United in 2019 but the Red Devils were reluctant to match an asking price of around £50m. United are now ready to renew their interest in the 27-year-old, however, in the hope that Longstaff could be signed in a cut-price deal.

The academy graduate has lost his place as a regular in Eddie Howe’s side, following the return of Sandro Tonali from suspension. He has made just eight starts in the Premier League and will have 12 months remaining on his contract in the summer.

Longstaff was an unused substitute as Newcastle ended their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy by beating Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final earlier this month.

Newcastle have also been hindered by Premier League Profit and Sustainability rules in recent transfer windows. The sale of the North Shields-born midfielder would count as ‘pure profit’ in PSR calculations.

According to the Chronicle, Everton are also understood to be interested in signing Longstaff, who has made 210 appearances for the Magpies since his senior debut.

Manchester United are expected to overhaul their midfield in the summer transfer window. Christian Eriksen to leave as a free agent, while offers will also be listened to for Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo.

Longstaff is viewed as a potentially ideal cut-price addition. His box-to-box energy is seen as a good fit for Amorim’s high-intensity brand of football.
