3 Mustapha Bundu replacements Plymouth Argyle should consider as the winger looks set to leave Home Park.
Plymouth Argyle will be seeking a replacement for the outgoing Mustapha Bundu this summer, following the news from his agent that the winger won't be staying at Home Park beyond the summer.
The Sierra Leonean ended the season on fire for Miron Muslic's men, scoring some strong performances and key goals which helped the Greens keep their survival bid alive right to the wire.
This saw speculation arise about whether Bundu would remain at the club beyond the summer when Argyle's relegation to League One was officially confirmed on the final day of the season.
With his contract coming to an end, Plymouth offered an extension to the wide-man, but in a recent conversation with PlymouthLive, Bundu's agent revealed that his client would depart the seaside city when his current deal expired.
With that in mind, Football League World decided to look at three potential Bundu replacements that Argyle could sign this summer.
If there's one thing the Pilgrims have been good at in recent years, it's their signings from abroad. Playing for Plymouth has proven to be a very attractive prospect for players in foreign leagues, which has seen the club grow massively in the last two years.
Aaron Opoku is one of the most comparable players to Bundu in Europe, with a similar build and playing style to the departing winger.
He is currently playing his football in the 2. Bundesliga with FC Kaiserslautern, and has been with the German club since 2022. As of this season, the winger has played just 12 times in the league, scoring two goals and assisting three.
Opoku could be keen to try his hand at something new, having thrived in his short amount of game time. Being Bundu's successor in League One could be a great opportunity should he wish to move away from his native Germany.
Quick, tenacious, right-footed, and possessing a strong aerial presence, Opoku offers everything that the Sierra Leonean has in his locker. With these similarities, it's likely that the attacker would thrive in Muslic's system.
At 26, the Kaiserslautern star is two years younger than Bundu, which potentially gives him a higher ceiling to grow into a better player than his predecessor.
It wasn't long ago that Micah Hamilton was being looked at as one of the next potential breakout stars of the Manchester City academy.
The winger played three times for the Citizens between July 2021 and August 2024, scoring one goal, which happened to be on his debut against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League in December 2023.
The 21-year-old completed a deal worth a reported initial £2m to Middlesbrough in the summer of 2024, but struggled to have any impact, which saw him loaned out to League One Stockport County.
He played just five times for the Hatters, failing to register a single goal contribution before returning to Boro for the second year of his four-year contract.
These facts may bring questions about why Hamilton is being suggested as a potential replacement for arguably Plymouth's best player. Truthfully, the former Man City prospect will likely be very frustrated with his 2024/25 campaign, and have a point to prove going into next season.
In a team managed by an excellent head coach in Muslic, playing football that will likely be on the front foot could bring the best out of Hamilton. He also possesses the pace, technique, and ability to cut inside and shoot which made Bundu so dangerous. A loan deal for the attacker also offers a low-risk option.
Australia international Kusini Yengi is in the hunt for a new club this summer, following his release from Portsmouth.
The 26-year-old played his part in the Pompey side that won League One in 2023/24, but has struggled for game time in the Championship, which led to John Mousinho opting to let the attacker leave Fratton Park.
It seems rather likely that Yengi will be a highly sought-after free agent this summer for third tier clubs, having proven his ability to be a real threat at the level.
The 11-time Australian cap winner has scored six goals for his country, all of which came in World Cup qualifying games, adding another impressive feat to his CV.
Mainly operating as a number-nine, Yengi has also been deployed on the left wing throughout his career, which gives him the level of versatility that Bundu has also shown during his time at Home Park.
Replacing the winger with a free agent who is already familiar with fighting at the top of League One, can cover multiple positions, and has a similar build and skill set to Bundu would be a very smart piece of business for Muslic.
