Real Madrid have agreed a new long-term deal with defender Raul Asencio.
The 22-year-old initially joined Madrid’s academy from Las Palmas in 2017. He has subsequently earned a regular spot in the first-team squad.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano claims Asencio has now signed a new contract which will keep him at the club until the end of the 2028-29 season.
Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti sees Asencio as an important player for Madrid. His solid performances have impressed the coaches and earned their trust.
His form for Madrid resulted in a call-up to the Spain squad for their Nations League quarter-final against the Netherlands. However, he did not play in either of the matches.
Madrid’s defence has been hit by multiple injuries, with Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, and David Alaba out of the picture.
Asencio’s emergence has brought much-needed depth and stability to the team.
Asencio has shown that he is a solid defender. He was one of Madrid’s best players in their Champions League tie against Manchester City last month.
Despite Asencio’s emergence, Madrid are still looking to sign another centre-back. Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen is one of their targets, while Arsenal’s William Saliba has also been linked with a move.
Despite this, Asencio’s new deal shows Madrid believes in his talent. His journey from the academy to the first team highlights Madrid’s ongoing focus on developing young players.
