Even though he is 39 years old, Luka Modric continues to prove himself to be a vital cog for Real Madrid.

The first captain this season, the Croatian international has excelled every time Carlo Ancelotti has called on his services despite him not being a regular starter any more.

With his contract expiring at the end of the season, there has been speculation about his future and whether Real Madrid would be willing to offer him another extension or not.

Real Madrid and Modric to continue for one more season

Now, according to Cadena SER (h/t Fichajes), after months of speculation about his possible departure, Luka Modric is set to continue at Real Madrid for one more season.

The Croatian midfielder, who turns 40 in September, has always wanted to retire wearing the Los Blancos jersey, and it looks like he will be able to achieve that goal.

As mentioned earlier, despite his reduced role this season, Modric has proven valuable to Ancelotti, especially in crucial moments where experience is key.

Modric remains highly valued at Valdebebas, both for he has already achieved at the club and also for what he can still contribute.

However, the report states that Real Madrid have made it clear that Modric must accept a pay cut, similar to what happened with other veterans like Sergio Ramos and Marcelo in the past.

The 39-year-old legend also understands that his role on the pitch will be more limited due to the rise of younger midfield talents. As such, his focus will shift more toward leadership in the dressing room and stepping up in key moments.

So, as things stand, unless something unexpected happens, everything points to Modric continuing at Real Madrid for one more season which could end up being his final campaign with the club.
