Bryan Gil and Alejo Véliz are two of Spurs' loanees that are piling their trade over in Spain for the 2024/25 season, playing for Girona and Espanyol respectively. Let's take a look at how they both got on this weekend when their pair of them headed north to the Basque country. Gil's Girona were in Bilbao to take on Athletic Club de Bilbao, whilst Véliz' boys were in San Sebastian to play Real Sociedad.
It was a pretty disappointing weekend for Gil, he started the match at the San Mames, where this years Europa League final is going to take place, but his Girona side conceded two quick goals just before half time and gave themselves an uphill battle for the second forty five. Gil was substituted on 67 minutes having made no real impact at all on the match and later on Bilbao would end up grabbing a third, with the same player scoring all three goals.
Girona however are still sat in 7th position in the La Liga table, which isn't too bad considering they've had to deal with having Champions League football, losing key players in the summer that ultimately led to a poor start to the season. Gil and his team mates will now have to put things right in a home match against Getafe, before they have anothet tough away game in two weeks time when they head to the Bernabeu to play Real Madrid.
Véliz and his Espanyol team were in really good spirits, they had just came off the back of a surprise 1-0 home win over reigning Spanish and European champions Real Madrid, courtesy of an 88th minute winner. However the blue and whites (although that's not what they wore today) were still looking over their shoulder being one point above the relegation zone after Valencia's win earlier in the day. Véliz started on the bench for the club from Cataloina for the third week in a row, he's still not really made too much of an impact for the club, netting just once in the ten starts he'd been given.
Espanyol would get off to the worst possible start, going a goal behind within the very first minute of the game. Sociedad would continue to dominate, limiting Veliz' team to just the one shot, with an xG (expected goals) at the break, indicating they need to get a striker on to try and force an equaliser.
Véliz would be subbed on at half time and the Cataloinan's would be awarded a penalty on 53 minutes, which would be tucked away. By this point they already had taken more shots in the second half than they did in the first half. The Argentina proving he can make an impact.
Unfortunately though Sociedad would regain their lead late on in the game, and that's how it would stay. Espanyol still 16th and a point off the relegation zone. They'll need to start picking up points, starting with next weeks game at home to Athletic Bilbao.
