John Obi Mikel’s podcast has been a great addition to the Chelsea media landscape, with the former Blues not afraid to speak his mind.

We already covered his thoughts yesterday on our fixtures to end the season – not pretty. But now the ex-midfielder has given some more positive thoughts about how we look in the medium term. He’s convinced that just a couple of additions will make the all the difference to Enzo Maresca as the Blues look to build into the future.

What Chelsea need to make title challenge a serious prospect according to former Blue

Despite all his criticisms of the team through this year, mostly very valid criticism, Mikel is convinced that the team are not far off a title challenge. There are just a few things they need, and he knows exactly what they are:

“I think we can [challenge next season], I think we can. Listen, we know where we have to strengthen, everybody knows… get another top, top striker. Again, to help, to help Nicolas Jackson, to help Nicolas Jackson,” said Mikel, who had been fearsomely critical of the Senegal star earlier this season.

“Now he’s injured, we’re struggling to score goals. Healthy competition, that’s what we’ve talked about here on this podcast. We’ve never criticised, a healthy competition is so important. If we get another top, top striker… we will be competing to win the league.”

But it wasn’t just up top that Mikel thinks we’re lacking – he also wants his old team to strengthen at the other end of the pitch with a “top goalkeeper, because every team that wins the Premier League has one.”
