West Ham were one of the busiest teams on the summer transfer window last year, and after needing to fire Julen Lopetegui while watching most of those signings burst into flames, the Hammers will, once again, be busy customers in summer 2025 with Graham Potter now at the helm.

Although most of their efforts will focus on adding impact players to the midfield and striker position, West Ham are eyeing long-term solutions at goalkeeper.

According to a report from Alex Crook of talkSPORT, the Hammers are preparing for 39-year-old goalkeeper Lukas Fabianski to exit the club this summer as a free agent after seven serviceable seasons in London after joining from Swanea. The former Arsenal man was one of the top keepers in the league at one point, but father time has cruelly caught up to the current backup.

James Trafford is the top candidate

Another former Arsenal goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale, is among the options favored to replace Fabianski, and West Ham are also interested in signing 22-year-old Burnley sensation James Trafford, who is wanted by Newcastle and other notable Premier League clubs.

Fabianski has a save percentage of nearly 75 this season despite only being the backup to Alphonse Areola, but it is better to move on from him now. Meanwhile, Areola, despite having his positive moments, has a save percentage well under 65 and is one of the worst goalkeepers in the Premier League.

Trafford may not be able to start immediately, but he has a huge amount of upside in the future. Ramsdale does not come with the same upside, but he was a serviceable keeper for Arsenal. He hasn't been nearly as effective at Southampton with a save percentage near the 66 percent mark, but pairing him and Trafford to replace Areola and Fabianski would be a long-term upgrade for the Hammers, though Ramsdale probably doesn't want a backup gig - even if it means saving him from relegation to the Championship.

West Ham don't need to spend big on a goalkeeper and have priorities elsewhere, but it would be wise for them to make an overhaul for the future. Areola himself is 32, so if West Ham can beat Newcastle to the punch for Trafford, it makes sense to take the gamble on the younger keeper. But beating Newcastle to a signing won't be easy for a West Ham side that is way behind the pack in the race for European places.
