Celtic captain Callum McGregor was distraught after Saturday’s Scottish Cup Final defeat to Aberdeen. The 31-year-old missed the first penalty of the shootout, which handed Aberdeen the initiative. In what was his 15th Final as a Celtic player, McGregor suffered defeat for the first time after Mitov saved Alistair Johnston’s penalty.
As the Dons celebrated their first Scottish Cup success since 1990, McGregor looked crestfallen. The skipper was comforted by Brendan Rodgers in what he would later call the worst moment of his career.
After the game, McGregor said that he would use the disappointment and hurt to push him next season to be stronger. There is no escaping that McGregor, like a lot of Celtic supporters, was hurt by the defeat. However, it is good to hear the player say that he will be using it as fuel for the next campaign.
McGregor is a winner and has been a sensational player and captain for Celtic. Since breaking through to the first team in 2014, McGregor has won an astonishing 24 major honours with Celtic, a figure that he will look to add to next season.
CalMac has made 518 appearances for Celtic, scoring 74 goals and laying on 80 assists. The midfielder will be looking to add to these numbers next season as well as having his pal Kieran Tierney return. Brendan has spoken about adding a number of quality players to Celtic’s first team next season, in a number of positions.
Make no mistake, the captain is a Celtic legend. Callum will bounce back from this heartache and it will serve as a reminder to all that trophies are hard earned.
