It’s only March, but Fabrizio Romano is already gearing up for a busy summer. He’s reported in today on a few players connected with Chelsea, who always provide him with plenty of content.

With two players already secured for the summer, the Blues’ major focus is on sales. Top of the list of players to go is Raheem Sterling. He was frozen out last summer, but no permanent move could be found.

He ended up on loan at Arsenal, where he has barely played, and it’s not surprise to hear Romano report that the Gunners won’t be making that deal permanent.

“Raheem Sterling, on loan at Arsenal. He’s going to return to Chelsea at the end of the season. Arsenal are not buying the player on a permanent transfer. But Chelsea’s intention is to sell the player. Raheem Sterling can find a new club,” the insider said.

Well, that makes things abundantly clear. But this is not going to be an easy operation. There’s a reason nobody came in for him last summer, when we were equally keen to sell.

Sterling is on huge wages, and after a couple of disappointing seasons at Stamford Bridge and now an even more disappointing one at the Emirates, interest will have dried up massively. Chelsea will have to accept a very low offer indeed if they want to get him off the books.

Last summer they already knew a sale would be difficult, and it won’t have got any easier since. The only positive is that he’s a year further into his contract, so a sale without a loss on the books is that much easier – but still, that’s cold comfort.
