Enzo Maresca has praised Levi Colwill for his leadership and believes the defender could become a future Chelsea captain.

The Blues have the youngest squad in the Premier League and with the departure of Thiago Silva at the end of last season there’s a real lack of leadership in the squad.

That has meant the Blues need existing players to step into leadership roles and set an example and the standards everyday.

Maresca thinks Colwill could be a future Chelsea captain

The Blues currently don’t have anyone in the first team squad over the age of 28 with Christopher Nkunku and Tosin Adarabioyo the oldest outfield players at 27.

A lack of leadership was something which was levelled at Chelsea last season and Maresca has already called out Reece James over his leadership capabilities this season.

Enzo Fernandez has grown into a leadership role and has captained the side in the absence of James, whilst Maresca has also praised Colwill and Tosin for their leadership abilities.

Colwill captained the Blues at Old Trafford last season and is an academy graduate so he gets what it means to play for the club and Maresca has singled out the 21-year-old as a future club captain.

“I can see the leader day by day, since we started in pre-season, something that he can improve in terms of leadership, he is improving a lot,” he said as quoted by The Evening Standard.

“Levi, even if he is not wearing the armband, he is one of the captains and in the future, he could be a captain of this club. Since we started, he is improving a lot.”

Colwill has certainly demonstrated leadership qualities throughout the season and has that fight and desire required to be a captain, but as Maresca has stated you don’t need the armband to be a captain and Colwill is starting to show how he’s valuable both on and off the pitch for Chelsea.
