Simone Inzaghi feels that Inter created enough chances to claim victory against Bologna on Wednesday night, but feels that the referees were not at their best during the eventual 2-2 draw in San Siro.

The Nerazzurri were held at home to Bologna in an end-to-end affair in San Siro. Santiago Castro opened the scoring before Denzel Dumfries and Lautaro Martinez struck back to make it 2-1 to Inter in the first half. Emil Holm’s first goal for the Rossoblu meant the scores ended level.

Inter had their chances to find the winner towards the end and came closest after Marcus Thuram’s cross in for Mehdi Taremi, which the Iranian couldn’t quite get to.

Inzaghi: ‘Congratulations to Bologna, Inter did what I wanted’

Speaking to DAZN after full-time, the Nerazzurri coach said: “Congratulations to Bologna, they were a difficult team to face. We played an excellent game, we fought by creating a lot and conceding the right amount. We should have positioned ourselves better for the second goal, but then we had a lot of chances to make it 3-2.

“We conceded an unlucky first goal and another from a rebound off one of our defenders. There is some regret that we didn’t grab the three points, but we have to respect the opponent. The team did what I wanted.

“It’s normal to feel a bit bitter because we had chances to make it 3-2. But we played against a physical, organised team that took us to the end. We had two goals through excellent workmanship and situations where we could have done better.”

Assessing where Inter went wrong when they conceded, Inzaghi said: “We were caught out from a throw-in for the second goal, then they got the ball in too easily. We have it back, a ball from Bastoni.

There were two similar chances, they had skill, but we could have defended better. We’ve played lots of games where we’ve done well defensively, today we could have done better. Lots of respect for the opponent, though.”

Does tonight’s result benefit Napoli?

“We have to look at ourselves. We won six games that put us in an excellent position in the table, we drew the seventh after six wins and a draw with Napoli. Now we have to give something extra. We have problems with rotations and the schedule, like everyone does, but we have to give more because every game in this league is very difficult.”

Inzaghi ended his interviews by suggesting that the referees were not at their best in the Inter-Bologna draw. Inzaghi himself ended up in the book in the first half, which means he will be suspended for his side’s match against Empoli at the weekend.

“The boys were a bit nervous and I didn’t want anything else to happen. The referees can make mistakes like tonight, or like in the Supercoppa final, but we have to have the utmost calmness. I didn’t want them to protest, I saw them get nervous following the Frattesi incident at the end and I wanted them to stay calm, because like us, referees can make mistakes.”
