Liverpool’s Summer Plans: Joe Gomez Exit, Lamine Camara Links, and Transfer Targets Under Arne Slot

As Liverpool approach a critical transfer window, key squad decisions loom large. In the latest Media Matters podcast from Anfield Index, Dave Davis and David Lynch dissected the futures of Joe Gomez, Lamine Camara, and others, shedding light on how Arne Slot’s Liverpool could take shape.

Joe Gomez Set for Summer Exit?

Joe Gomez has been a dependable squad player for Liverpool, but his future at Anfield looks increasingly uncertain. With young centre-back targets being monitored, Lynch was clear in his assessment: “That spot is going to open up with Joe Gomez leaving.”

Despite his versatility, the competition for places means Gomez may seek more regular football elsewhere. Lynch pointed to Liverpool’s pursuit of young defenders such as Joël Ordóñez and Konstantinos Koulierakis, suggesting the club is preparing for life without him. While he has been a solid servant for Liverpool, this summer could mark the end of his time at Anfield.

Lamine Camara: On Liverpool’s Radar or Just Rumours?

Reports linking Liverpool to Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara have gained traction, but Lynch was sceptical about any imminent move: “To be honest, I haven’t heard anything that makes me think he’s necessarily hugely on the radar.”

The Senegalese international, known for his tenacity and work rate, has been compared to a young N’Golo Kanté, but as Lynch noted, “They’ll be watching him, I don’t question that, but it’s a long way from Liverpool looking at him seriously.” Given Liverpool’s current depth in midfield, any move for Camara would likely depend on outgoings.

Darwin Núñez’s Uncertain Future

Darwin Núñez’s time at Liverpool has been a rollercoaster, but his performance off the bench against PSG was a reminder of what he can offer. Lynch highlighted his surprising composure in that moment: “Would you have expected, of all players that late in the game in a Champions League knockout match, Darwin Núñez to be the most composed? You probably wouldn’t have had money on it, would you?”

Despite flashes of brilliance, Lynch expects Núñez to leave Anfield this summer: “He’s going to go in the summer, I don’t think there’s any doubts about that.” If he does depart, Liverpool will need a new forward, with Alexander Isak one of the most frequently mentioned names.

Liverpool’s Defensive Revamp Under Slot

Liverpool are expected to focus on strengthening their defence, with young centre-backs a key priority. Lynch made it clear: “They’re going to be shopping for a young centre-half this summer. That spot is going to open up with Joe Gomez leaving.”

Joël Ordóñez, Konstantinos Koulierakis, and Feyenoord’s Dávid Hancko have all been linked, and Liverpool appear intent on refreshing their backline. While no deals are close, the club’s long-term scouting of young centre-halves suggests they are ready to act when the window opens.

Joe Gomez’s time at Liverpool looks set to end this summer, while Lamine Camara remains a name on the club’s watchlist rather than an immediate target. Darwin Núñez’s future is also up in the air, with Lynch expecting an exit. With Arne Slot stepping in, Liverpool’s squad is set for a shake-up, particularly in defence. The coming months will be decisive in shaping the club’s next chapter.
