FLW outline the weekly wage outlay of Aston Villa's Lewis Dobbin after switching from West Brom to Norwich City on loan.
Aston Villa forward Lewis Dobbin has joined Norwich City on loan for the remainder of the season after being recalled from West Bromwich Albion.
Head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup will be keen to strengthen his squad this month amid a mixed start to life in Norfolk, and Norwich could still make a late push for play-off contention if they get things right this January.
The 21-year-old winger/striker joined Villa in a £10 million deal from Everton back in the summer. However, Dobbin was then directly loaned to the Baggies, where he made 17 appearances after joining but only one of those came as a start.
He struggled for game time under both Carlos Corberan and was unable to contribute a single goal or assist for the West Midlands outfit and in early January, The Athletic broke the news that the winger was to have his spell at The Hawthorns terminated in order to make the switch to Thorup’s side.
Dobbin was left out of Albion's matchday squad for their 3-1 New Year's Day home win over Preston North End, before joint-caretaker boss Chris Brunt confirmed that the two clubs had come to an agreement to terminate the loan.
After such limited game time with the Baggies, Dobbin will be keen to kick on in his development, but will have to compete with the likes of the in-form Borja Sainz at Carrow Road.
Aston Villa moving on Dobbin to somewhere else in the league should come as no surprise given his lack of game time at West Brom. However, Sainz's presence down the left could mean that he is not playing much more for Thorup’s side than he was with Albion.
At the very least, Dobbin is not too significant in terms of outlay, despite that big money switch to Villa from Everton recently. Per Capology, Dobbin earns £416,000 per year as his estimated gross salary or £8,000 gross per week, excluding bonuses.
It’s hard to imagine this year working out much for Dobbin if this latest switch doesn’t lead to increased game-time, which ultimately hurts his development as a player.
Although Dobbin would appear to represent a natural potential replacement for Liverpool loanee Kaide Gordon, who has struggled for both form and regular action this term, reports have claimed that his impending arrival isn't going to affect anything on that front.
Gordon has started just once for Norwich this term, scoring one goal from nine matches. However, as per an update from journalist Samuel Seaman, the signing of Dobbin isn't going to have any impact on Gordon's current loan from Liverpool.
Instead, Dobbin is reportedly viewed as a replacement for Christian Fassnacht, who recently left Norwich to return to Swiss side Young Boys. He is competing with the likes of Gordon, Sainz, and Onel Hernandez for minutes on the flank for the remainder of the season.
The former Derby County loan man was signed in time to be in contention to feature in Saturday's home clash against Coventry City, where he was introduced from the bench for Norwich in a 2-1 win over Frank Lampard's side in the 60th minute.
There is clearly a talent in Dobbin, but perhaps the end product isn't there right now - Thorup could be the right man to get a little bit more out of the forward over the next few months.
