Newcastle United have held talks as they try to sign William Gomes.
The exciting Brazilian teenager a target for NUFC.
Over in Brazil, Globo Esporte say that their information talks have taken place between Newcastle United and Sao Paulo.
A bid expected to be made with other clubs also after the 18 year old winger/attacking midfielder.
Having turned 18 in March, William Gomes then signed a new and enhanced four year contract in August, which takes him up to December 2028.
The football season in Brazil runs during a calendar year and this 2024 season it started in April and runs through to December.
Sao Paulo are currently sixth (of twenty) with 51 points after 31 league matches.
This season has seen the teenager become a regular in the matchday squad and has been named on the bench in 23 of the 31 league matches and started another three. Including four appearances off the bench, William Gomes has managed 346 minutes of league football and scored two goals this season. As well as featuring in another handful of games in other competitions, as Sao Paulo gradually look to progress a teenager who is believed to have great potential.
The most recent league start for William Gomes was last month, he scored the only goal of the game in an away win over Cruzeiro, subbed off in the second half for a certain Jamal Lewis, as Sao Paulo looked to close out the win.
As with all transfer stories, you always have healthy scepticism, however, at least in this case it is fair to suppose that there are easy lines of communication for Newcastle United with Sao Paulo considering that recent Jamal Lewis deal between the two clubs.
The Brazilian media outlet claim that part of that new contract agreed in August, there is a release clause of €120m (approximately £100m).
However, it isn’t uncommon for young South American players to have such very high speculative/ambitious release clause figures, that bear little relation to what a player is then sold for.
Sao Paulo need to sell one or more players to help balance their finances, so this is a possible transfer to keep an eye on.
Newcastle United continue to sign teenage talent from the UK and overseas as they attempt to get quality young players with potential, who could be the first team players of the future.
Only yesterday, it was revealed that a deal had been done to sign 17 year old to sign highly-rated Georgian forward Vakhtang Salia from Dinamo Tbilisi.
