According to a report from L’Équipe, Olympique Lyonnais have decided to sack Pierre Sage from his role as manager following the weekend’s 1-1 draw with FC Nantes.
Sage had rapidly become a surprise hit last season when he took on a Lyon side that was sat bottom of the table. The head coach with no previous managerial experience (outside of a stint with Chambery in 2013) managed to work a miracle taking Lyon to the Coupe de France final (which they lost to Paris Saint-Germain) and into Europe.
This season Lyon have flattered to deceive at times and the head coach has been in the crosshairs since Lyon’s shock elimination from the Coupe de France at the hands of amateur side FC Bourgoin-Jallieu. However, the decision finally was made after subsequent draws with FC Toulouse, Fenerbahçe, and Nantes.
L’Équipe writes that the favourite to replace Sage is former Lille OSC and AC Milan head coach Paulo Fonseca. However, John Textor has also looked at the Portuguese coach Luis Castro.
