Hands up then who had heard of the two names in the headline before this morning. Good with them firmly down you can continue scrolling with ease. Don’t worry though neither had I.
But in this article, I will bring to attention everything I now know about the soon-to-be Blades.
The 22-year-old Peruvian winger currently plays for FBC Melgar. Melgar recently finished fourth in Peru’s Liga 1 table for the 2024 season. Finishing just five points from top of the league in the league’s first phase. Before rising to third and only two points off the top of the table after the second phase.
Last season, Cáceres contributed eight goals and six assists for FCB Melgar in just 24 appearances. His best season of his career, with his other significant season in 2023 at Binacional on loan. Where he played 22 times scoring 3 goals and two assists.
Importantly playing once in the Copa Sudamericana and getting one assist. The South American competition equivalent to the UEFA Europa League. Cáceres also made two appearances in the competition for Melgar in 2021.
Cáceres is reportedly 5 foot 6. Predominantly a left-winger but can play across the forward line. He is a player at the early stages of his career. After his recent season finishing so highly with FCB Melgar, it may be time for him to take his next step.
The younger of the two, Nwachukwu, 19, plays for Botev Plovdiv. The Nigerian winger, can play on the left or the right, but favours the left.
Nwachukwu began his youth career at Nigerian side G12 FC and from 2022-2024 was with FDC Vista Gelenzhik. Vista are a Russian side Nwachukwu is one of several Nigerian players to have moved from Vista to Botev Plovdiv. With 18-year-olds Abraham Ojo and Malik Odeyinka recently leaving Vista and joining the Bulgarian club this season.
In his first season at the club, Nwachukwu played eight times in the Bulgarian first league scoring once.
This season from 25 appearances in all competitions Nwachukwu has scored four goals and got one assist so far. Eighteen of his appearances and three of his goals came in the First League. But four of his appearances came in the Europa League with him scoring and assisting in Europe’s second competition. Notably, these appearances were in the qualification phase of the Europa League.
This season he has started 15 times and played 1,275 minutes, proving to be regularly involved in Botev Plovdiv’s team.
Cáceres and Nwachukwu are interesting signings for Sheffield United. The Blades aren’t used to signing unknown commodities. But Chris Wilder has been known to get the best out of signings Blades fans and rivals are unsure of. If their signings are announced today before 11pm. It’s time to see if he can take his skills worldwide.
In terms of squad depth, the two offer the underserved wide positions a more acceptable number of options. With Rak-Sakyi, Brooks, Brereton-Diaz taking the numbers closer to five first-team wingers.
Plus, for just £2 million, the pair aren’t massive risks financially. As well as being important case studies in the owner’s reported new AI scouting model. Will it work? Time will tell.
