Looking at the Newcastle team v West Ham.

Eddie Howe and his players hoping to bounce back to winning form.

A win on Monday night would take Newcastle into sixth place.

It would mean Newcastle United level on points with fifth placed Man City and just two points off Chelsea in fourth.

So, what can we expect the Newcastle team v West Ham to be?

As a starting point, this was the Newcastle team v Brighton in the last match:

Dubravka, Livramento, Trippier, Schar, Burn, Joelinton, Tonali, Miley, Gordon, Isak, Barnes

On Friday morning, Eddie Howe gave us some pointers as to fitness and availability.

Four players definitely ruled out, with Lascelles, Botman and Hall all injured, whilst Gordon is suspended.

So my predicted Newcastle team v West Ham:

Pope, Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento, Tonali, Bruno, Joelinton, Willock, Isak, Murphy

If my call is correct, it would make it four changes from that Brighton game:

IN:

Pope, Bruno, Willock, Murphy

Dubravka, Gordon, Miley, Barnes

With Botman, Hall and Gordon ruled out, that certainly ‘helps’ to decide the likely starting eleven, both for myself and Eddie Howe.

Back before the November 2024 international break, we saw a reminder of just how good that Willock/Joelinton combination can be on the left. Three wins in a row at home to Chelsea (Carabao Cup) and Arsenal, then away at Forest.

Those games against Arsenal and Forest saw Anthony Gordon switched to the right from what I remember, which of course included that beautiful cross for Isak’s winner against the Gunners.

Obviously no Anthony Gordon for this West Ham match, so if my Willock/Joelinton on the left proves correct, it appears to be a choice of Murphy or Barnes on the right.

Murphy has better form this season AND Barnes usually looks more dangerous off the bench, so that’s my reasoning.

I prefer Nick Pope to Martin Dubravka, so for me Pope has to play tonight,

Lewis Miley has done well recently but Eddie Howe for sure going with his first choice midfield trio of Tonali, Bruno and Joelinton.

Trippier will play right, with Livramento on the other side.

I think for sure Eddie Howe will play what he considers his strongest available eleven tonight, with the intention of getting some renewed momentum via a win at West Ham. Then if all goes to plan in this Premier League match, I reckon the NUFC Head Coach will be intending to play exactly the same Newcastle team v Liverpool on Sunday at Wembley.
