Marseille centre-back Lilian Brassier (25) will leave Les Phocéens to join formative club Rennes on loan, according to L’Equipe and Foot Mercato. Brassier only joined Marseille in the summer on a loan move from Brest with an obligation to buy set at €12m. Given the Frenchman’s rather poor performances under the tutelage of Roberto De Zerbi, Marseille have agreed not to trigger the option to make Brassier’s move to Vélodrome permanent. Rennes winger Amine Gouiri (24) is set to go the other way and sign for Marseille.
All the involved parties have agreed the situation could not carry on. Brassier opened the door to an early Marseille exit and Les Phocéens have terminated his loan. Brest will then loan the centre-back to their bitter Brittany rivals Rennes under the same conditions. Les Rouge et Noir were looking for defensive signings as Leo Ostigard and Hans Hateboer are far from convincing and have often been found wanting. Get French Football News understands that Jorge Sampaoli’s departure has facilitated Brassier’s arrival at Rennes.
Foot Mercato adds that Brassier is set to undergo a medical this Friday evening at Rennes. It remains to be seen whether the Frenchman’s arrival will stop Rennes’ pursuit of Lens centre-back Kevin Danso.
