Burnley are confident of signing Plymouth Argyle winger Morgan Whittaker before the transfer window closes tonight.

This is according to Pete O'Rourke, with the Clarets looking set to be busy during the final hours of the window.

They have already managed to get a couple of signings over the line in recent days, with Hannibal Mejbri joining from Manchester United in a permanent deal and Jaidon Anthony securing a loan move from AFC Bournemouth.

But after losing several key players since their first league clash of the season earlier this month, the Lancashire side seem to be keen on getting some more deals over the line to boost their promotion chances.

Some of their summer departures have come in the wing department, although some of these exits were needed, considering the vast number of options they previously had in this area.

Following their relegation, relieving pressure on the wage bill by offloading some of these first-teamers was a must, with Darko Churlinov and Dara Costelloe departing on loan.

Wilson Odobert, Anass Zaroury and Johann Berg Gudmundsson followed the pair through the exit door, but unlike the other two, the trio all secured permanent exits from Turf Moor.

Some of their other wide players have also been linked with a move away from Lancashire in recent times, including Manuel Benson and Vitinho, and Nathan Redmond is currently out injured.

Anthony may have come in already as a wide option, but it looks as though the Clarets are keen to add another wide player in this department, and they could be set to get their wish before the deadline tonight.

This late in the day, the Pilgrims will surely be keen not to lose their star player, having done fairly well in the transfer market.

His departure would allow the club to secure a very decent sum of money if he leaves permanently without a loan deal, but they wouldn't have much time to recruit a replacement, and that could be a major blow in their quest to remain in the Championship for the long term.

And the player still has three years left on his contract, so it would make sense for Wayne Rooney's side to retain him.

Despite this, the Clarets are confident of signing the player, according to O'Rourke, having reportedly submitted a new bid.

Burnley's Morgan Whittaker move is an interesting one

The Clarets already have some other decent wing options at their disposal.

However, with other wingers being linked with moves away from Turf Moor, Whittaker may be a much-needed addition.

Having scored 20 goals in all competitions last term, he could be a real game-changer for Scott Parker's side if he joins, and he could help to fill the void that has been created after Wilson Odobert's departure.

It would be difficult to see the Pilgrims accepting a loan-to-buy deal though, because it isn't a deal that suits them unless they are guaranteed a hefty sum of money down the line.

Even then, Plymouth would surely want a decent amount of money up front this summer.
