Stoppage-time heartbreak for Ajax

Ajax have thrown away their lead at the top of the Eredivisie, after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser against 10-man Groningen on the penultimate weekend of the season.

The Amsterdam side, captained by England’s Jordan Henderson, were nine points clear in mid-April with just five games left. They only needed six more points to wrap up their 37th Dutch league title.

But a dreadful run - two heavy defeats and two draws -has let PSV right back into it. PSV thumped Heracles 4-1 on Wednesday and have now leapfrogged Ajax by a single point heading into the final round.

Just a couple of weeks ago, PSV captain Luuk de Jong said in a post-match interview: "Nine points is too much. I don't think it's ever happened before that a team has been overtaken with such a lead and with so few games remaining."

Ajax must now beat Twente on Sunday and hope PSV fail to win against Sparta Rotterdam. Both matches will kick off at 1:30pm.
