20 years ago, today, marked a special moment for Barcelona as Lionel Messi made his competitive debut with the club.

On October 16, 2004, the then 17-year-old came on as a substitute in a derby against Espanyol at Montjuic, replacing the club’s current sporting director, Deco in the 82nd minute.

Despite Barcelona’s injury woes, which sidelined players like Jorquera, Gabri, Sylvinho, Motta, Edmílson, Gerard, and Giuly, Messi’s entry hinted at the start of a legendary career.

Barcelona, struggling with injuries, turned to their reserves, featuring five young players, including Messi wearing the iconic number 30.

Deco had scored the decisive goal in the 9th minute, and the score remained 0-1 until the final whistle, marking a memorable debut for Messi.

Start of a legendary career

Messi’s debut against Espanyol marked the first step in a historic journey that saw him become the most successful footballer in history.

Over his illustrious career at Barcelona, Messi played 778 games, scoring 672 goals and winning 35 titles, including 10 La Liga and 4 Champions League trophies.

He also claimed seven Ballon d’Or trophies during his time at the club, solidifying his status as one of the greatest of all time.

After leaving Barcelona in 2021, Messi’s journey continued with stints at PSG, Inter Miami, and the Argentine national team.

In the three and a half seasons since his departure, he has added to his trophy cabinet, now boasting 46 titles. His latest achievement came with Inter Miami, winning the MLS Supporters Shield, as he eyes further success in the MLS Cup playoffs.
