France’s all-time goalscorer continues to reach new milestones for both club and country.
In Olympique Lyonnais’ UEFA Women’s Champions League victory over Bayern Munich 2-0 this week, Eugénie Le Sommer (35) reached the century mark for appearances in that competition when she came on for Kadidiatou Diani (29) two minutes before the end of regulation time.
She’s only the second player to achieve that feat since the 2009-10 campaign, with the other one being her teammate with Les Bleues and Lyon Wendie Renard (34).
In late February, Le Sommer became the most capped player for the French national team during their UEFA Nations League triumph over Iceland (3-2), making her 199th appearance.
That’s more than any player ever on the French men’s or women’s side, while the 13-time Division 1 Féminine champion also has the most career goals for the national team with 94, well above the men’s record goalscorer Olivier Giroud, who netted 57 for Les Bleus.
Le Sommer is the third-highest goalscorer in Women’s Champions League history, scoring 50 goals, with only Anja Mittag (39) and fellow Lyon striker Ada Hegerberg (29) netting more with 52 and 65, respectively. The woman born in Grasse has lifted the Champions League trophy eight times and was the leading scorer in 2011-12.
