Sport Bild reports that Bayer Leverkusen remains confident that Florian Wirtz will extend his contract at the club, despite the noise surrounding the 21-year-old.

In recent weeks, Bayern Munich have been heavily linked with a move to Wirtz, whether this is serious or just an attempt to put off Leverkusen ahead of their Champions League tie is yet to be seen. However, this could have resulted in a stalling of talks around Wirtz’s contract extension.

Leverkusen remains confident that Wirtz will extend his contract at the club until 2028. The deal will see him earn a double-digit million salary and then a release clause will be included for after the 2026 World Cup.

During talks over an extension, Leverkusen mentioned to the Wirtz family that he can still struggle to control his emotions in big games, such as the losses to Liverpool, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich in the Champions League this season. It was said that he needs to get better at controlling them, as he did in the DFB Pokal quarter-final win against former club 1.FC Köln.

One of the ideas is that Wirtz continues to learn how to become more resilient in tough situations before taking the next step in his career.

Talks between Leverkusen and Wirtz are well advanced, and with the 21-year-old’s recent injury, he has more time to think about his future.
