Juventus and Danilo have officially parted ways a few weeks after Thiago Motta and the brass decided to exclude him from the squad. He seemed headed to Napoli at the time, although the Bianconeri weren’t too keen on helping their rivals. Things have changed in the meantime. He’ll go back to Brazil and sign with Flamengo instead, Relevo’s Mattia Moretto informs.
The veteran will play along with Alex Sandro for a third time after their spells at Porto and in Turin. He departs after five seasons and a half. He originally came in as part of the Joao Cancelo swap with Manchester City.
Danilo leaves after accumulating 213 appearances with Juventus. He contributed to winning one Scudetto, one Supercoppa Italiana, and two Coppa Italia. He became the captain last season following the ousting of Leonardo Bonucci.
The defender had just six months on his contract and was bound to leave on a free. He won’t receive a severance package, Sportitalia relays. In previous months, he and the team agreed to remove an appearance-based clause that could have triggered an extension. Still, he only played when the Bianconeri were very depleted defensively.
Throughout his career, he has lifted the Champions League twice with Real Madrid, the Copa Libertadores with Porto, the Premier League twice with Manchester City, and the Portuguese league with Porto among a host of trophies.
His decision is more of a blow for Napoli than the Old Lady, as he clearly wasn’t apt in their system, which requires more athletic defenders. He was a class act in the end, and his exit could have been handled a lot better, but that’s no surprise for them.
