Bringing Aston Villa a step closer to winning a trophy is hugely important on Sunday. The buildup for fans offers promise as Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest already found their way through to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
For Unai Emery and his men, the fixture against Preston North End means joining those sides and the winner of AFC Bournemouth and Manchester City in the second-to-last round of the competition. The stakes are known, and everyone on the grounds knows what silverware would mean.
As the Premier League club, most are selecting AVFC to go through. Any knockout tournament, however, can see anyone progress to the next round. Without Emery's side playing at a high level, a surprise could potentially happen.
This is particularly true away from Villa Park. Traveling away always presents its own challenge. Regardless of where or against whom, the Villans know that they will need to avoid taking their opponents for granted.
Now starting England national team striker Ezri Konsa gave some direct insight into the mentality of the side heading into the PNE game. Speaking on this aspect, he shared, as reported on the club website:
"It shows that they’re here to win as well. They’ve beaten teams prior, that’s why they’re here. I’m sure they’re going to go into the game thinking that they can beat us, so it’s going to be a real tough game. I’ve played there before, and I know how tough it is."
The center-back is discussing a PNE side that will be eager to show that they are deserving of being this far. As a Championship team, they could pose a threat as their players will try to grab the home victory at Deepdale.
Playing without anything to lose can often be dangerous for anyone slated as favorites. Knowing Emery, though, the players becoming lax and not going full throttle, especially after a long international break, is unlikely. This is only further illustrated by the words of Aston Villa CB Konsa.
