John van ‘t Schip’s tenure got off to a solid start as Ajax pulled themselves out of the relegation zone with a narrow victory over Volendam to stop the bleeding for now.
Scorers: Bergwijn 57′, Akpom 89′
While it didn’t end in a goal, it was an impressive first half from the ailing Ajax side.
A Steven Bergwijn effort from the edge of the box rang the crossbar, but it was not to be for the home side after waves of pressure.
The breakthrough finally came after the restart when Bergwijn was rewarded for his efforts, slotting home the go-ahead goal just before the hour mark.
Volendam had the chance to strike level in the final 15 minutes when Ajax let them in behind inexplicably, but Diant Ramaj came to the rescue of the home side, denying the onrushing forward on the breakaway.
To make the occasion even sweeter, Chuba Akpom finally opened his Ajax account in the final minutes of the clash, sealing the three points for the hosts with his first goal in the red and white shirt.
