Olympique de Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi spoke today in his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s Olympico clash at the Stade Vélodrome. With the end of the January transfer window only a few days away, the Italian coach spoke on the potential arrival of Stade Rennais striker Amine Gouiri, after Marseille and Rennes reportedly reached an agreement on a deal late last night according to L’Équipe and Foot Mercato. “It’s not official yet, so we’ll have to wait a little longer before we can say anything about Gouiri,” began De Zerbi on the Algerian international striker in the press conference transcribed by Get French Football News. “He’s a strong player who could be useful, but he’s still very young. It would be a major purchase. But Benatia and Longoria are doing good things at the moment. I don’t know if there will be any more movement. I hope so. We’re working towards a common goal with a single direction for everyone.”
“He’s a versatile player who can play as a centre-forward, just like when he started his career. He’s a player I’ve known quite well for a long time. He can play in every attacking role, in every position.”
Foot Mercato understands that Gouiri has been allowed to leave Rennes to undergo a medical with Marseille this morning, with the club having set an asking price of €25m after two initial bids from OM were turned down by the Breton side. GFFN | George Boxall
